WHAT IS DEPRESSION?
Many of us have mood swings, and sometimes we need help. But sometimes we can get stuck in a "depressed" mood and need help. Depression has various symptoms such as loss of energy, loss of interest in activities and in life, sadness, loss of appetite and weight, difficulty concentrating, self-criticism, feelings of hopelessness, physical complaints, rejection of other people, irritability, difficulty making decisions and suicidal thinking. Many depressed people also experience anxiety. They often experience anxiety, nausea, or dizziness, and sometimes have hot and cold flashes, blurred vision, palpitations, and sweating.
What is the peculiarity of depression?
How does depression differ from emotions, such as anger or fear?
Firstly, depression is not an emotion, it is a condition. It is not situational, it is
stable. And there are many different emotions in the depths of it. It can be melancholy,
despondency, resentment, boredom, anxiety, etc.
Secondly, the fact that depression, in the vast majority of cases, is an acquired condition.
Few people are born with depression, and it usually comes during their lifetime.
Depression has certain signs (symptoms), here are the main ones:
- decreased (bad) mood.
- decrease in pleasure and interest from what previously brought pleasure and was interesting. To the point of complete inability to experience a sense of pleasure.
- sleep disorders (falling asleep for a long time, sleeping with awakenings in the middle of the night, sleeping with early awakenings ...).
- impaired appetite (decreased appetite more often, possibly also increased appetite with overeating).
- weight loss or, conversely, weight gain.
- there may be a feeling of longing, despair, anxiety and irritability
- ideas of self-blame and self-abasement, decreased self-esteem and self-confidence.
- a pessimistic view of the future.
- unwillingness to communicate or do anything.
- decreased sexual activity.
- difficulty concentrating and completing current tasks.
- feeling of weakness, fatigue, weakness.
- suicidal thoughts in severe depression.
If these symptoms last for at least 2 weeks, you can talk about depression. If you have already found signs of depression in yourself, ask for help.
